The Eclectic Penguins Waddled In from England

eclectic-pengiun-1You may recall in my earlier post I had been reading about these cute penguin geocoins in a few blog posts and I had to have one.   I tracked down the website where I could actually buy them and placed my order for one copper and one brass finish.

Yesterday (1/15) they waddled through the door… Well I guess technically I must have been doing the waddling because they were nicely packaged in a bubble wrap envelope.  (I’m thinking I should have had the real “Eclectic Penguin” activate them and dip them in a local cache so I could start accumulating mileage from their home.)

As I suspected they were made by Oakcoins.  I am quite impressed with their work.  To me they seem to make real nice coins… nice weight, good enamel work, and excellent packaging.  I don’t know about price but I suspect that as I continue in my adventures in Geocaching that I will have my very own signature coin and that I will be checking with Oakcoins for pricing.

Anyway I got my two penguins.  I ordered a brass one and a copper one.  I really prefer the copper coloration and this is going to be the one that will end up in my collection. (I will be creating a picture gallery of all of my collection coins so you can see what I’ve got.)

The coin really is elegantly simple!  Standing at about 1.5″ tall and 1.25″ at its widest, the front features the classic “tuxedo”, black and white with a purplish bow tie.  His eyes are also colored as are his little feet.   On the reverse it says ” The Eclectic Penguin” in a larger stylized font, then the word “Geocoin” a bit smaller, and finally, much smaller,  “You can track me at: www.geocaching.com:”.  There is raised square in the metal finish with the tracking numbers.   I find that my brass coin is much easier to read than the copper.

Shipping was extremely quick considering it came from England.  I would have liked to see some instructions or something with the packing list describing the activation process but since I am familiar with Oakcoins and how they do it, it wasn’t that big of a deal for me.

Overall quite satisfied… You can look for me to release my brass penguin into the world in the spring.  Maybe I will have to start a geocoin/travel bug race of some kind…or perhaps give him the mission to visit The Penguin Post Office and then return to me.
